An attractive stone built and stone slated double fronted former weaver's cottage built at some time between 1765 and 1798. The property has interesting stone features including mullion windows and stone quoins. There are solid oak beams supporting the first floor. There is also a useful keeping cellar which was clearly designed as a storage area for produce.
It is believed that the cottage was modified after the passing of the William Pitt Light Tax Legislation in the very early 19th century as the rear elevation clearly shows where windows were filled in. Contemporary maps in the Huddersfield public library local history section show that it was built as part of the Ramsden Estate, maps of the estate in 1798 show the cottage as a detached property.
The Ramsden Estate was a large concern and based at Longley Hall, situated just up Lowerhouses Lane. However the whole estate was acquired by the Huddersfield Corporation in 1924 and the cottage was then administered from the Town Hall. The property was designed as a weavers cottage and the north-south alignment means that the morning sun lights the front of the cottage whilst the back of the property gets the afternoon sunlight.
There are records which show that the cottage was a Quaker meeting house at sometime in the early 19th century, when non conformism was a strong element in local communities. The property had a completely open plan first floor until the early 1950s, to allow the light to illuminate the looms of the cottage workers. In the mid 1950s the first floor was redesigned to allow for three substantial bedrooms, generous landing area and a bathroom.
There are attractive gardens to the front and side of the house with two outbuildings at the rear. The cottage overlooks the bowling green at the rear of the property and there is potential for off road car parking.
The current owner moved in to the cottage in 1948 and has lived there ever since. It has been a good family house but does need some modernisation and development work. It has excellent potential for improvement and increasing value. The accommodation comprises:-
