Property Details

This fascinating property was built in approximately 1958 by Captain Alan Villiers as his retirement home. He lived there until his death in 1982
Captain Villiers was a world renowned seafarer, author and adventurer. Most notably, he was involved in the building of the replica of the ship, the Mayflower, which originally took the Pilgrim Fathers to Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts USA approximately 400 years ago.
To celebrate 350 years since the sailing of the first Mayflower, Captain Villiers commanded the Mayflower II across the Atlantic and sailed her up the East River, New York arriving on 1st July 1957; he and his crew received a ticker-tape welcome by the city. Today, Mayflower II is still seaworthy and resides near Plymouth Rock at Providence Rhode Island USA.
The house has been much expanded since the current owners acquired the property on 4th July 1984 yet retaining many elements of the original property, particularly some of the mahogany used in the making of Mayflower II.
