S2 Area Guide
Arbourthorne, Castlebeck, Heeley, Highfield, Granville, Lowfield, Manor, Norfolk Park, Park Hill, Woodthorpe, Wybourn.
The S2 area of Sheffield stretches from the City Centre east towards Castlebeck, and south towards Heeley. The types of property in S2 are predominantly terraced houses, although you can find detached properties at a lower price than many other areas of Sheffield. Over the past decade the area has been subject to wide-scale regeneration to diversify the housing stock, although social renting is still the most common tenure.
Close to the city centre and the train station is an area called Park Hill where the Park Hill Flats are sited. It was built between 1957 and 1961, and in 1998 was given Grade II listed building status. Following a period of decline, the estate is being renovated by developers Urban Splash who have completely updated and rejuvenated the estate. As part of the refurbishment of the estate the developers have chosen to illuminate a portion of famous graffiti on a bridge reading "I love you will u marry me" in neon, adding to the estate's iconic status.
Norfolk Park, Granville, Manor, Wybourn, Woodthorpe, Castlebeck and Arbourthorne are all areas which have a large amount of social housing. Sadly the Manor estate gained notoriety as being deemed as one of the worst estates in Britain, much to the outrage and indignation of the residents. Although the area has seen some issues in the past, regeneration in these areas has had an impact. These areas benefit from local shops and the transport links are good with the supertram serving Norfolk Park and Manor Top. Granville in particular has some excellent stone built detached villas and a rather large number of semi-detached villa terraces. With the property prices being comparably low here, it may be of interest to people wanting to upsize from other areas of Sheffield but who wish to stay in same price bracket. This area may also be of interest to first time buyers struggling to get onto the property ladder.
Highfield and Lowfield stretch west of S2 and are in the vicinity of Bramall Lane, home to Sheffield United Football Club. A lot of the houses are terraces and offer excellent investment opportunities due to the buoyant rental market. Although not particularly a student area, houses in this area rent well due to the proximity to the city centre and London Road, which offers numerous restaurants, pubs and bars.
South of S2 is Heeley, which when compared to other areas in the south of the city, such as Nether Edge, is very affordable. The rental market in Heeley is increasingly active. Heeley has been overlooked by students in the past, who naturally migrate to the north of the city to find accommodation. But as rental prices soar in traditional "studenty" areas, convenient and more affordable neighbourhoods like Heeley are becoming more popular with students and young professionals. Small terraces and town houses are typical of the property in Heeley, making it popular with first time buyers. Transport links to Heeley are excellent as the main road through Heeley is the A61 London Road South/Chesterfield Road. There are frequent buses that serve this route.
Heeley has a lovely community vibe about the place, not least demonstrated by the Heeley Festival. This is a free entry annual event hosted at Heeley City Farm which boasts arts, crafts and local stalls, iron forging demos, entertainment, kids activities, hot food stalls, beer tent and music.
There are plenty of activities for adults and kids in S2 as it's home to: Grovesnor Casino, Skate Central, Heeley City Farm, 99 Jump Street, Lock Up Escape and Hagglers Corner. There are 3 allotment sites: Manor Allotments, Park Rifles Allotments, Corker Bottom Allotments, and S2 boasts some of the best parks in Sheffield. Norfolk Heritage Park has 28 hectares of Grade II listed historic parkland with beautiful views over the City of Sheffield. It has recently refurbished playgrounds including a brand new woodland play area and family picnic and play space.
The Cholera Monument Grounds is a conservation area which has received a Green Flag Award. Housing the Cholera Monument which is a memorial to the victims of a cholera epidemic of 1832. The monument is situated in gardens laid out around the monument in the 1850s and next to Clay Wood, an ancient woodland. The monument is grade II listed.
South Street Park and Ampitheatre was built as part of a £800,000 regeneration scheme. Many events take place at this stunning outdoor theatre including classic films being shown on a big screen and travelling theatre companies performing Shakespeare. Even when events are not taking place, it is a lovely place to sit and take in the panoramic view of the city.
There are numerous excellent places to eat and drink in S2, with the majority of these being around the London Road area. From Japanese, Lebanese, Persian, Mexican, Greek, Thai and Turkish, there really is something to suit everyone. Harland Café specialises in homemade cakes and these include gluten free and vegan choices. Dim Sum Chinese Restaurant, serves exactly what you'd expect, a wonderful choice of mouth-watering dim sum. Wasabi Sabi is a Japanese Restaurant which not only serves sushi, bento boxes and other traditional Japanese food, but it also has a couple of teppanyaki tables if you fancy including a touch of theatre to your dining experience. The Clubhouse is one of Trip Advisor's top Sheffield restaurants and is perfect if you fancy a beer and burger whilst watching football on a big screen.
